Data retention
How long history is kept
Section titled “How long history is kept”Cost and usage history is kept for a number of days set by your plan tier. Once a day’s data passes that window, it’s deleted and no longer appears in the Cost Explorer, Usage Explorer, or any chart.
Retention windows vary by tier — check your plan’s details on the Plans & tiers page for the exact number of days. Upgrading extends the window immediately; the extra history isn’t backfilled, since it was already deleted under the old window.
Removing a source deletes its history
Section titled “Removing a source deletes its history”Disconnecting a cost source, event source, or usage source does more than stop new data from coming in. It also deletes that source’s historical data:
- Removing a cost source deletes its cost data.
- Removing an event source deletes its timeline events.
- Removing a usage source deletes its usage data.
This deletion is permanent. Reconnecting the same source later starts a fresh sync from that point forward — it does not restore the data that was deleted when you removed it.
For example, if you disconnect AWS after two years of cost history and reconnect it a week later, the Cost Explorer shows data starting from the reconnection date. The two years of prior AWS history are gone.
If you’re disconnecting a source to troubleshoot a credential problem or temporarily pause a sync, be aware that removing the connection is not a safe pause — it deletes history immediately. To stop a sync temporarily without losing data, ask an account admin about adjusting the source’s sync interval instead of removing it.
