Upgrading & billing
Plutus has five tiers: Hobby, Starter, Growth, Scale, and Enterprise.
- Hobby is free and doesn’t require a payment method.
- Starter, Growth, and Scale are self-serve, paid through Stripe. Each is priced monthly or annual, with annual pricing working out to about two months free compared to paying monthly.
- Enterprise is contact-sales-only — there’s no self-serve checkout for it.
Starting a paid plan includes a 14-day free trial. A payment method is required up front, and the trial converts to a paid subscription automatically when it ends unless you cancel first.
Checkout accepts whatever payment methods are enabled on the account — typically cards, Google Pay/Apple Pay, Link, PayPal, and ACH/SEPA bank debit. Bank-debit methods (ACH/SEPA) settle asynchronously, so a subscription can briefly show as processing right after checkout instead of switching to active immediately.
Changing or canceling your plan
Section titled “Changing or canceling your plan”Plan changes and cancellation are done in-app, from the account’s billing page (admin role required). Every change — upgrade, downgrade, cancel, reactivate — asks you to confirm before it takes effect, since each one calls Stripe immediately.
- Switching plans (e.g. Growth to Scale, or monthly to annual) takes effect right away and is prorated: Stripe charges or credits the difference for the remainder of the current billing period rather than waiting for renewal.
- Switching plans while on a trial doesn’t end the trial. It changes which plan you’ll be trialing and, later, billed for — the billing page always shows the plan you’re currently trialing, not just a bare renewal date.
- Canceling doesn’t end access immediately. It stops the subscription from renewing at the end of the current billing period, and you keep full access to your current tier until then — up to a month of access left on a monthly plan, or up to a year on an annual one. There’s no refund or proration for the unused time. Once the period ends, the account reverts to the free Hobby tier automatically.
- Reactivating before the period ends undoes a pending cancellation and resumes normal renewal.
For updating a card on file or reviewing past invoices, the billing page links out to a Stripe-hosted Customer Portal. That’s a separate, Stripe-run page — it handles card capture and any required verification itself, and returns you to Plutus when you’re done.
In-app cancellation vs. deleting your account
Section titled “In-app cancellation vs. deleting your account”These are two different actions with different consequences, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re taking:
- Canceling your plan (above) only stops future renewal. Your account, data, and connections are untouched, and you keep paid-tier access through the end of the period you already paid for.
- Deleting your account is immediate and permanent. If you have an active subscription, deleting the account cancels it right away — not at the end of the period — and all account data is removed at the same time. There’s no refund or proration for time already paid for and not used.
The second point matters most on an annual plan: deleting the account two months into a prepaid year forfeits the remaining ten months, with no refund. The account-deletion confirmation screen states this explicitly, naming your billing interval, before you confirm — if you’re on an annual plan and just want to stop paying going forward, canceling the plan (not deleting the account) is very likely what you want instead.
If a payment fails
Section titled “If a payment fails”A failed renewal payment doesn’t cancel the subscription immediately. The subscription’s status changes to reflect the failed payment, and normal Stripe retry/dunning behavior applies before any change to your plan takes effect. If a subscription is later canceled — whether by you, by a failed payment resolving to cancellation, or by an out-of-band change on Stripe’s side — the account reverts to the free Hobby tier.
